NSE President Urges Engineers to Adopt Technology-Driven Approaches to Tackle Insecurity
By Ugbede James Ankpa
The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Ali Alimasuya, FNSE, FASCE, FAEng, MFR, has called on Nigerian engineers to leverage innovation, systems thinking, and technology-based methodologies to support government efforts in addressing the nation’s lingering security challenges.
Engr. Alimasuya made the call on Saturday, January 31, 2026, during the inauguration of the 17th National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Engr. Dr. Babagana Modu Tella, FNSE, held in Abuja.

He described the theme of the ceremony, “Insecurity in Nigeria: Engineering Approach for Effective and Efficient Solutions for National Development,” as a timely and practical framework for professional engagement. According to him, mechanical engineering in particular, and the engineering profession in general, plays a critical role in driving industrial development, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and enhancing national security systems.
The NSE President stressed that insecurity should be approached as a complex system requiring multidisciplinary engineering solutions. These, he said, include data analytics, surveillance technologies, local manufacturing capabilities, logistics optimisation, and sustainable infrastructure development.
“Engineering is essentially about problem-solving. Our interventions must be anchored on logic, structure, modelling, and evidence-based reasoning to deliver lasting solutions to complex security challenges,” he stated.
Delivering the keynote address, the Director-General of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), Engr. Major General Babatunde Alaya, FNSE, highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening indigenous defence production and improving the deployment of military and paramilitary resources to guarantee a secure environment for economic activities.

In a technical presentation, the Guest Speaker, Engr. Dr. Umar Buba Bindir, FNSE, FAEng, underscored the importance of engineers proposing implementable solutions integrated within social systems engineering and viable investment frameworks. He noted that deliberate engagement with leadership structures and institutions is crucial to translating engineering innovations into measurable security outcomes.
