By David Odama
The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, alongside other lawmakers, has applauded media practitioners in the state for their immense contributions to the growth of democracy and the promotion of good governance.
Jatau gave the commendation during the Media Day, Thanksgiving, and Prayer Service organized by the Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ (ERCC) Gloryland in Lafia on Sunday.
The event brought together serving and retired journalists to reflect on the watchdog role of the press in upholding societal values, deepening democracy, and ensuring accountability in governance.
In his remarks, Dr. Jatau praised journalists for keeping the public informed, promoting government programmes, and holding leaders accountable. He, however, urged them to continue upholding fairness, justice, and truth in their reportage.
The Speaker further called on the media to support Governor Abdullahi Sule’s administration by showcasing its achievements and ensuring it stays on course, assuring that the assembly would continue to partner with journalists for the good of the state.
Other lawmakers, including Hon. Solomon Akwashiki (Lafia Central) and Barr. Esson Mairiga (Lafia North), also lauded the role of the press in promoting democratic ideals, describing the media as a critical driver of societal growth.
On his part, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Addra, commended the existing synergy between the press and government, promising that the present administration would continue to provide a conducive environment for journalists to perform their duties effectively.
The ceremony also featured goodwill messages from the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Salihu Alkali (represented), guest speakers Dr. Nawani Aboki, and Associate Rev. John Godiya. They all emphasized the need for fairness, justice, and God-centered service in journalism.
Special prayers were later offered for media practitioners as the church’s Media Week came to a close.
