The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Grace Ike, has extended warm New Year greetings to media professionals in the council, reaffirming the leadership’s commitment to prioritising members’ welfare, professional development, and ethical standards in 2026.

In her New Year message to members on Monday, Ike applauded journalists in the FCT for their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the profession despite the challenges faced in the previous year.

“The passing year tested our resilience, professionalism, and collective resolve, yet you stood firm, upholding the ideals of our noble profession with courage and commitment,” she said.

According to the council chairman, the New Year presents an opportunity for journalists to “reset, refocus, and re-energise” in their service to society. She described journalists as the “conscience of society and custodians of truth,” adding that their roles in democracy, national unity, and narrative shaping remain essential.

Looking ahead, Ike reiterated the council’s resolve to intensify efforts towards improving members’ welfare and working conditions, expanding training and capacity-building opportunities, and ensuring institutional support for journalists across the FCT.

“The Council is committed to deepening efforts that prioritise members’ welfare, professional development, and unity. We will continue to advocate for improved working conditions, capacity-building opportunities, and institutional support that empowers our members to thrive in an evolving media landscape,” she stressed.

Ike also restated the importance of upholding ethical standards, especially as misinformation and disinformation continue to threaten public trust. She urged journalists to recommit to accuracy, fairness, balance, and integrity in their reports, guided strictly by the NUJ Code of Ethics.

“Ethical journalism remains the cornerstone of our profession. Let us remain guided by our Code of Ethics, ensuring that our reports inform, educate, and inspire without fear or favour,” she noted.

The chairman emphasized the need for solidarity and unity within the council, noting that the collective strength of the NUJ lies in its shared vision and mutual support among members.

“I urge every member to approach 2026 with optimism, responsibility, and a renewed sense of mission. Let us embrace innovation without compromising values, pursue progress without losing our principles, and remain steadfast in service to the public interest,” she added.

Grace Ike concluded her message with prayers and best wishes for all members and their families, hoping that 2026 brings professional fulfilment, peace, and prosperity.
