Oba Akran of Badagry passes on at 89

The Akran of Badagry in Lagos State, Oba Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has joined his ancestors at the age of 89.
The respected traditional ruler reportedly died on Monday, January 12, 2026.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the monarch’s passing were yet to be made public.

It is, however, expected that the Akran Palace will issue an official statement to clarify the circumstances of his death.
Born on September 18, 1936, Oba Akran was a former journalist before ascending the throne of his forefathers on April 23, 1977.
Throughout his long, peaceful and impactful reign, the late monarch was widely regarded as a symbol of unity and a revered voice for the people of the ancient Badagry kingdom.
He served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, where his wisdom, counsel and leadership played a significant role in shaping traditional and communal affairs across the state.
Oba Akran was also known as a great lover of his people, consistently promoting peace, harmony and community development within Badagry and its environs.
His death marks the end of an era for the ancient town, as residents and traditional institutions mourn the loss of a highly respected royal father and community leader.
