Reps Committee Applauds Rivers Sole Administrator Ibas, Vows Support for Democratic Transition
The House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on Oversight of the Rivers State Administrator has lauded Sole Administrator Ibok-Eket Ibas for his strides in stabilising the state during the ongoing emergency rule, pledging its commitment to restoring democratic governance.
Led by House Leader and Committee Chairman, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, the delegation visited Rivers State on Thursday for a courtesy call and inspection tour as part of its oversight duties.
Speaking during the visit, Ihonvbere commended the Administrator’s performance and reaffirmed the National Assembly’s resolve to ensure a smooth transition to civilian rule.
> “We are encouraged by the progress so far. The House of Representatives is committed to supporting a seamless return to full democratic governance in Rivers State,” he said.
The lawmakers toured the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, where reconstruction is underway to prepare for effective legislative work after the emergency period. Ihonvbere noted that the scale and quality of the ongoing works reflected readiness for a functional assembly.
In his response, Ibas thanked the National Assembly for its support and oversight role, which he said had strengthened his administration’s efforts. He emphasised that restoring security had been a key focus and a notable success.
He further disclosed that preparations were ongoing for local government elections slated for 30 August 2025, aimed at reinstating democracy at the grassroots level. According to him, the Rivers State Government has provided adequate funding to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RVSIEC) to ensure credible and hitch-free polls.
The Administrator also briefed the committee on priority projects, including the Assembly complex reconstruction, the completion of the Mother and Child Hospital in Port Harcourt—set to be handed over to the Rivers State Teaching Hospital—and the long-delayed dualisation of the Port Harcourt Ring Road. He revealed that ₦150 billion had already been paid for the road project, though work was yet to commence.
The committee expressed satisfaction with Ibas’ performance and urged that all critical projects, especially those impacting infrastructure and public services, be completed as scheduled to consolidate gains made during the emergency period.
Ihonvbere assured that the House would maintain close oversight, provide necessary legislative support, and work to guarantee a timely and orderly return to democratic governance.
Both parties agreed on the need for continued cooperation between State and Federal authorities to sustain peace, fast-track development, and ensure the successful restoration of democratic rule in Rivers State.
The visit concluded with inspections of key project sites, where lawmakers expressed optimism that the state was firmly on the path to stability and progress.
