The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has appealed to the National Assembly to enact a clear and unmistakable legislative provision mandating the electronic transmission of election results as part of the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act.
In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP expressed concern over what it described as opposition by the leadership of the 10th Senate to reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral system.

The party noted that during the public hearings on the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2026, Nigerians overwhelmingly called for real-time electronic transmission of results as a means of boosting public confidence in the electoral process.
According to the statement, the SDP stressed that technological tools such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) are essential for minimizing human errors and curbing manipulation of election results.
The statement further emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) possesses the necessary capacity and infrastructure to transmit results electronically, provided there is clear legal backing.
Consequently, the party urged lawmakers to ensure that the amended Electoral Act includes an explicit provision making real-time electronic transmission of results by polling unit officials mandatory.
The SDP also called on citizens and civil society organisations to remain alert and proactive ahead of the 2027 general elections in order to protect and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
