By Iyojo Ameh
The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointments of five nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The confirmation followed the presentation of the report by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Simon Lalong (APC–Plateau), during plenary.
The confirmed RECs are:
Umar Yusuf Garba – Kano State, Sa’ad Umar Idris – Bauchi State, Chukwemeka Ibeziako – Anambra State, Umar Mukhtar – Borno State and Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinkiem – Bayelsa State
Senator Lalong stated that the committee thoroughly reviewed the nominees’ credentials, professional experience, and integrity during the screening exercise.
“The nominees demonstrated competence and a clear understanding of the responsibilities required of them. The committee found them qualified and hereby recommends their confirmation,” he said.
The Senate adopted the committee’s recommendations without objection, clearing the nominees to assume their roles as RECs.
The appointments are expected to bolster INEC’s operational capacity as it prepares for future electoral activities across the country.
