Senator Barau Sympathises with Singer Market Traders, Donates N100m to Fire Victims
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, on Sunday paid a sympathy visit to Singer Market in Fagge, Kano State, following a devastating fire incident that destroyed goods and property estimated at over N5 billion.
This was contained in a statement issued by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, and made available to journalists in Abuja.
Senator Barau was received by the Chairman of the market, Alhaji Junaidu Zakari, along with thousands of traders affected by the inferno. During the visit, he donated N100 million to assist victims and alleviate the impact of the losses suffered.
In his address to the traders, the Deputy President of the Senate expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, emphasising that the incident affects not only the traders but also the entire people of Kano and the nation at large.
“This fire outbreak and the significant losses recorded have affected all of us. It impacts the whole of Kano and the country in general. Commerce remains the backbone of Kano, and we are deeply saddened by this development,” he said.
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, pledged to facilitate the provision of a modern fire control facility at the market to help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the market, Alhaji Junaidu Zakari, disclosed that the market had suffered two major fire outbreaks in recent times, leading to losses exceeding N5 billion. He expressed sincere appreciation to Senator Barau for the visit and his continued support.
“We are proud to welcome you to Kano. We deeply appreciate the consistent support you have given us. You have done so much for our community. Thank you very much,” he stated.
Senator Barau was accompanied on the visit by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata; the Kano State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Malam Salisu Sagir Takai; members of the Kano State House of Assembly; Special Advisers; and other aides.
