The Sierra Leone High Commission in Abuja has clarified its position following allegations made by a Sierra Leonean citizen, Isha Francess Dumbuya, during a social media video interview, insisting that it remains committed to the welfare of Sierra Leoneans in Nigeria and other countries under its accreditation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the High Commission said it has consistently provided support to its nationals, noting that repatriation efforts have been significantly strengthened since High Commissioner Julius F. Sandy assumed office.

According to the Commission, a total of 422 Sierra Leoneans have been repatriated this year alone, with an additional 74 currently undergoing arrangements to return home. These efforts, it said, were achieved through collaborations with international partners, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The High Commission explained that it is unable to render assistance to individuals without proper verification of their claims, citing previous cases where funds and support provided were allegedly misused by some beneficiaries.

“We urge all Sierra Leoneans resident in Nigeria to formally register with the High Commission either at our Abuja office or the Lagos liaison office to enable us to serve them better,” the statement said.

Officials of the Commission noted that the allegations raised by Dumbuya had not been formally presented to the High Commission, adding that her case remains unknown to the mission as of the time of the statement.

The High Commission reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of Sierra Leonean citizens abroad while ensuring transparency and accountability in the delivery of assistance.
