Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has presented a ₦758.7 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly, with emphasis on socio-economic growth and sustainable development.
According to the governor, the proposed budget allocates 41 per cent to the economic sector, 37 per cent to social services, and 16 per cent to healthcare. Major projects captured in the budget include the completion of the Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital, procurement of 21 ambulances, upgrading of educational infrastructure, provision of agricultural inputs and support to farmers, installation of solar-powered facilities for water supply, renovation of mosques, construction of Islamiyya schools, and other infrastructure projects, particularly in roads and transportation.
Governor Aliyu disclosed that the budget would be funded entirely from the federation account and internally generated revenue, stressing that no borrowing or debt would be incurred.
He further explained that the spending plan prioritises capital expenditure, which accounts for 72 per cent of the budget, while recurrent expenditure represents 28 per cent, in line with recommendations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
The governor expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their continued support, particularly the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and his political mentor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. He also pledged to work closely with the State House of Assembly to ensure effective implementation of the 2026 budget.
