Soludo Visits Onitsha Main Market as Traders Defy Sit-at-Home, Resume Business

Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday paid a visit to the Onitsha Main Market to show solidarity with traders who defied a directive by a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) calling for a “total shutdown” of the market in compliance with a sit-at-home order.

During the visit, the governor moved around various sections of the market, interacting with traders and sharing in their renewed optimism after weeks of losses. Many of the traders are reported to have lost billions of naira in revenue due to the prolonged Monday sit-at-home disruptions.
It would be recalled that Governor Soludo had earlier ordered the closure of the market for one week after traders initially flouted the Anambra State Government’s directive discontinuing the sit-at-home order.
However, following engagements between the state government and market leadership, both parties reached an agreement last week, which led to the reopening of the market.
