The Anambra State Police Command has detained three police inspectors accused of extorting money from a civilian during a routine patrol in Awka, the state capital.
The development was confirmed in a statement on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the officers’ conduct and ordered the immediate commencement of internal disciplinary proceedings.
The incident reportedly occurred during a security patrol when the officers unlawfully stopped a civilian, conducted a forced phone search, and allegedly extorted money from him.
“The CP further directed the immediate commencement of internal disciplinary proceedings of the force against the officers,” the statement read. “The CP, during interrogation of the officers, frowned at the poor character exhibited when they accosted an unsuspecting member of the public during a security patrol, forcibly searched his phone, and extorted money from the victim.”
SP Ikenga said the Commissioner emphasized the importance of professionalism and accountability in policing, warning that misconduct would not be tolerated.
“The CP noted that such anomalies, aside from negating the professional calling of the police, are unacceptable as they affect the entire execution of policies and directives,” the statement continued. “Your character will widen the trust gap between the citizens and the force.”
He added that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding discipline, transparency, and public trust, stressing that any breach of conduct by officers will be met with appropriate sanctions.
The police did not disclose the identities of the detained officers, but assured the public that justice would be served in line with internal disciplinary procedures.
