Trump Recalls US Ambassador to Nigeria, 28 Other Countries in Major Diplomatic Shake-up
US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping diplomatic overhaul, ordering the recall of American ambassadors from dozens of countries, including Nigeria.
Among those affected is the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, who is part of a total of 15 ambassadors recalled from Africa.
In the Asia-Pacific region, the affected countries include Fiji, Laos, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Vietnam. In Europe, Armenia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovakia were also impacted, while Guatemala and Suriname in the Western Hemisphere were included. This brings the total number of recalled ambassadors to 29.
According to a report by The Guardian UK, the affected career ambassadors and senior diplomats were appointed during the administration of former President Joe Biden, suggesting that President Trump intends to replace them with individuals aligned with his administration’s policy direction.
The newspaper quoted a State Department official as describing the recall as “a standard process in any administration,” stressing that an ambassador serves as “a personal representative of the president” and that it is the president’s prerogative to ensure that diplomats posted abroad advance the America First agenda.
Reports indicate that the diplomats began receiving their recall letters from last Wednesday, with most expected to return to Washington by January 2026.
In Nigeria, Ambassador Richard Mills assumed duty in May 2024 and, under normal circumstances, was expected to serve a minimum of two years.
