Yuletide Operations: OPWS Foils Criminal Ambush, Neutralises Three, Recovers Two Motorbikes in Benue
From Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have neutralised three criminals in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful yuletide season.
This was disclosed by the Force Commander, Joint Task Force OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, in a statement signed by the Acting Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, and made available to journalists in Makurdi on Friday.
According to the statement, the suspects were killed in a joint operation carried out by the Nigeria Police Force, Zaki-Biam Division, and the Benue State Community Protection Guard on 11 December 2025, following credible intelligence.
The security team reportedly moved quickly to confront a criminal gang that had mounted an illegal roadblock along the route connecting Aturuku, Wembe, and Ayati villages in Borkyo Council Ward of Ukum LGA.
Intelligence reports indicated that the armed group had been ambushing and dispossessing unsuspecting travellers at the blocked junction.
Upon engaging the criminals, the troops overpowered them, neutralising three, while others escaped into the surrounding bushes.
During the operation, two motorcycles used by the gang were recovered, and a manhunt has commenced to apprehend those who fled.
Further findings revealed that the neutralised suspects were members of a notorious syndicate behind several security breaches, including repeated kidnapping incidents across Ukum LGA. Their operations are also believed to be linked to recent abductions near the Zaki-Biam yam market.
Community members later identified the deceased as Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe of Ugbaam Council Ward, and a third individual from Tse Kpeakaa, Kundav Council Ward.
Sources have additionally connected the group to a notorious bandit kingpin believed to be operating within the Shitile axis of Katsina-Ala LGA.
Major General Gara commended the synergy among security agencies and praised the personnel for their courage, discipline, and professionalism throughout the mission.
He urged the troops to sustain the operational momentum, intensify intelligence-led operations, and strengthen security presence in high-risk areas.
The Force Commander reaffirmed OPWS’ unwavering commitment to protecting lives, supporting civil authority, and restoring lasting peace across the Joint Operations Area.
