Former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has applauded Cross River State’s vast agricultural endowments and pledged greater investment in the sector to drive national development and inspire younger generations.

Kwankwaso made the remarks during a courtesy visit to Governor Bassey Otu at the Government House, Calabar, where he was received on behalf of the governor by the Deputy Governor, Rt.

Hon. Peter Odey.

The former governor, recalling his long-standing ties with leaders of Cross River dating back to his days as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1992, described the state’s fertile land and favourable climate as natural assets for agribusiness. He explained that his decision to embrace farming after public service was a conscious move to remain productive while creating sustainable opportunities for future generations.

“I chose to be a farmer because, whether in office or not, one must remain productive. Farming guarantees food security, creates wealth, and keeps you engaged. I am here with my children so they can also see the value of investing in agriculture,” Kwankwaso said.

Responding on behalf of Governor Otu, Deputy Governor Odey welcomed Kwankwaso and his delegation, noting that their choice of Cross River as an investment destination was timely and strategic.

He highlighted government initiatives in the sector, including the distribution of three million oil palm seedlings across all 18 local government areas, the promotion of cocoa and coffee cultivation, and the introduction of wheat farming — a first in southern Nigeria.

“Cross River is blessed with fertile soil and a strong agricultural base. Oil palm, cocoa, coffee, and even wheat are thriving here. We are also the safest sub-national for businesses to flourish, and our hospitality sets us apart. You are in the right place to do business and invest,” Odey remarked.

The deputy governor also revealed that Cross River will host the Intra-African Trade Fair in 2026, with a focus on agriculture and investment, further cementing its role as a key agricultural hub.

He assured Kwankwaso of the state government’s full support, security, and partnership in any ventures he chooses to establish in Cross River. “On behalf of the governor and the people of the state, we warmly welcome you and look forward to building lasting ties with you and your team,” Odey concluded.
