Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has passed away at the age of 76.

She was the wife of the late Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving leader, who died five years ago. Rawlings, a former military ruler, led two coups before later winning democratic elections to serve as president.

Tributes have continued to pour in on social media for the late first lady, following reports from presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu that she died on Thursday morning after a brief illness.

During her tenure as First Lady, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings established the 31st December Women’s Movement — a women’s organisation named after her husband’s second coup on December 31, 1981.

The movement has, over the years, worked to empower women across Ghana, helping them acquire skills and earn livelihoods that contribute to the development of their communities.
