People Are Hungry!
By Dr jarlat Uche opara
My dear People of God, created in his image and likeness. Saved by his blood and redeemed from the clutches of sin into eternal life, I greet you.
Each time I stand on this pulpit, behind this microphone to preach every morning my heart aches.
My heart aches not because of my deficiency in proclaiming the gospel undiluted, but because of the reality of lack, hardship and worries of what the future holds written all over your faces. My heart aches, however sweet, reassuring and hope giving my sermons and homilies give to you, the gap between what my words promise and the reality of what you pass through daily , a gap so yawning only God knows how you survive.
I know that you are hungry. I know equally you find it difficult to pay your rents and school fees, however pained and unhappy I am, there is little I can do.
Each day my office is inundated by those looking for what to eat. Who would I help and who would I turn back empty handed?
It pains, saying to a mother of two who comes with her children looking hungry and unkempt, there is nothing Fada Blunt can do to help š Many I have said that to, so hard to say, but I had to for nothing to help them with.
I know there are many here in my church who have been blessed by God in a very special way. I beseech you brethren to help those less privileged among us. Let us live our lives, caring for one another the best way we can. It is good to built befitting place of worship for God, it is also befitting to lend a cup of water to the thirsty, a lump of food to the hungry and a piece of cloth to the naked.
It is befitting to savour the standing ovations that comes from a huge donation made for church projects, it is equally befitting to give to the poor without the razzmataz of public approval.
We need one another in this journey of faith and salvation. As for me Fada Blunt, I would prefer a moderate, decent place of worship where nobody goes to bed hungry, goes naked without cloth, has no roof over their heads than an ostentatious place of worship with many worshipers begging for bread.
Let it not be that at the last day before the judgement seat of God this would be said of me “Fr. Blunt you built churches, schools, hospitals and recreational centres. Spending millions on esthetics and beautification of the things that would perish while souls died in hunger both spiritual and material”.
God forbid!
