Police investigate alleged killing of Kogi teacher by parent over disciplining pupil

The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged killing of a nursery and primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who was reportedly assaulted by a parent after disciplining a pupil.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the incident was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25.

According to the statement, the 30-year-old teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, was allegedly attacked by Abdullahi Ishaka and two women over disciplinary action taken against a child.

Saliu said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects stormed the school and assaulted the teacher, leaving her with serious injuries.

She explained that the victim was first treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before she was referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further medical care.

Despite medical efforts, Usman later died from the injuries she sustained.

The police spokesperson said officers from the Olamaboro Division visited the school and the deceased’s residence as part of the ongoing investigation, while relevant documentation had been completed.

She added that the body would be taken to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

According to Saliu, the suspects fled before police officers arrived at the scene, but efforts are ongoing to track and arrest them.

She said the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the suspects are apprehended for further investigation and prosecution.

The police assured the public that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

The identities of the two women alleged to have participated in the assault, as well as the pupil involved, were not disclosed.
