Nigeria, Israel Deepen Strategic Partnership on Security, Innovation, Trade

Nigeria and Israel have reaffirmed their resolve to deepen strategic cooperation in security, innovation, agriculture, healthcare and trade, with both countries pledging to strengthen partnerships that will drive economic growth and address emerging security challenges.

The commitment was reaffirmed on Monday when the outgoing Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, paid a valedictory visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in Abuja.

Speaking during the meeting, Odumegwu-Ojukwu applauded Ambassador Freeman for his role in strengthening diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Israel throughout his tenure, describing the bilateral relationship as one with immense potential for greater collaboration.

She said Nigeria is committed to expanding cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, border security, security financing and capacity building to bolster national and regional security.

The minister also advocated stronger collaboration between Nigerian startups and Israeli technology companies, noting that Israel’s globally recognised expertise in innovation, water resource management and modern agriculture could significantly enhance Nigeria’s agricultural productivity and technological advancement.

Freeman, in his remarks, described Nigeria as an “amazing country” with warm and hospitable people, expressing appreciation for the support he received during his diplomatic assignment.

He reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in key sectors, including innovation, agriculture, healthcare, education, skills development and security.

The envoy further expressed confidence that bilateral trade, currently estimated at about $200 million annually, would continue to grow as both countries expand investment and commercial opportunities.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustaining the longstanding diplomatic relationship and exploring new areas of cooperation for the mutual benefit of Nigeria and Israel.
