Nigeria’s NiMet DG Charles Anosike Emerges ACMAD Board President
The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has been elected President of the Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD).
Anosike’s election, for a four year term, took place on September 10, 2026, at the 24th Ordinary Session of the ACMAD Board of Governors in Cotonou, Benin, held in conjunction with the 22nd African Climate Outlook Forum (ACCOF22).
His emergence places a Nigerian meteorological expert at the helm of the continental body at a time African countries are confronting increasingly severe weather and climate risks and seeking stronger early warning and climate information systems.
As Board President, Anosike will provide strategic direction for ACMAD’s governance and institutional development, while promoting stronger partnerships and improved climate services across the continent. His responsibilities will also include supporting the Centre’s mandate to advance the application of weather and climate information to sustainable socio economic development.
The election is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s contribution to continental efforts aimed at improving meteorological services, climate resilience and disaster preparedness. It also aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring that reliable weather and climate information contributes to the protection of lives and property and supports economic development.
Anosike assumes the leadership position as African nations intensify efforts to anticipate, prepare for and respond to extreme weather events under the United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative.
The ACMAD Board meeting brought together governors and institutional partners to review the Centre’s progress and determine its strategic direction and governance priorities.
Those who featured at the high level opening included ACMAD Director General, Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye; Vice President of the ACMAD Board and Director of Niger Meteorological Services, Dr. Adamou Aïssatou Sitta; African Union Commission Director of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy, Mr. Harsen Nyambe; and Benin’s Minister of Living Environment and Transport in charge of Sustainable Development, H.E. Georges Alé.
Anosike’s election is expected to deepen continental collaboration in the production, dissemination and effective use of weather and climate information as Africa works to build greater resilience to climate related threats.
