By Iyojo Ameh
A United Kingdom–based non-governmental organisation, Empower a Woman has donated reusable sanitary pads to female inmates at the Ilesha Custodial Centre as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene among women in correctional facilities.
Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Dr.
Adenike Sheyindemi, Head of the Gender Advisory Unit, who confirmed the development on Thursday, said the gesture is one of the organisation’s many charitable initiatives targeted at supporting vulnerable women across Africa.According to her, each inmate received a pack containing five reusable sanitary pads. She noted that the NGO, founded by Rev. Amanda Bedzrah a long-time advocate of menstrual health had also supported similar interventions during this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Dr. Sheyidemi commended the organisation for consistently championing the dignity and well-being of women in custodial centres, saying the donation would help improve menstrual health management and reduce the financial burden on inmates.
