Senator Godiya Akwashiki, representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has died at the age of 52.

Akwashiki reportedly passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in an Indian hospital where he had been receiving treatment for a protracted illness.

A family source confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nassarawa Eggon on Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to the family source, the senator’s death is “a big blow” to the district and the state, noting that his contributions to development and empowerment initiatives left a significant legacy.

“Since in the history of Nasarawa North, Sen. Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced due to his purposeful leadership.

His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency, and he was the only senator to re-contest and win a second term in the zone,” the source said.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon, Akwashiki built a career in politics that spanned decades. Before his election to the upper chamber of the National Assembly in 2019, he served as Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

His tenure in the Senate was marked by constituency projects, legislative interventions, and youth empowerment programmes, which supporters say distinguished him as a “transformative representative” of the district.

Details of burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
