The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has urged motorists to make safety a top priority by obeying traffic laws and driving responsibly as Nigerians welcome the New Year.
In his New Year message, Mallam Shehu Mohammed emphasized that the joy of celebrating a new beginning should not be overshadowed by preventable road traffic crashes caused by speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking and deliberate disregard for traffic rules.

He noted that experience has shown that the New Year period is often characterised by increased vehicular movement, fatigue-related driving and reckless use of roads, factors which significantly increase the risk of crashes.
The Corps Marshal therefore advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good roadworthy condition, observe speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and remain fully attentive while driving. He also encouraged travellers to properly plan their journeys, take sufficient rest and cooperate with traffic and safety personnel deployed across the country.
Reassuring Nigerians of the Corps’ preparedness, he stated that FRSC operatives have been strategically positioned on major highways and critical corridors to effectively manage traffic, respond swiftly to emergencies and enforce compliance with road safety regulations.
While stressing that road safety is a collective responsibility, Mallam Shehu Mohammed appealed to all road users to adopt safety-conscious behaviour that will help safeguard lives and property as the nation enters the New Year.
He concluded by wishing all Nigerians a productive, peaceful and safer New Year.
