FG Inaugurates Diving Governing Board to Strengthen Safety Regulations DIVING SAFETY
The Federal Government has inaugurated a Diving Governing Board to strengthen safety regulations and protect workers involved in commercial diving operations across Nigeria.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, inaugurated the Board in Abuja, charging members to ensure strict enforcement of the Factories (Diving at Work) Regulations, 2018.
Dingyadi said the expansion of maritime activities, oil and gas exploration, and underwater engineering had made the protection of commercial divers a national priority.
He noted that the sector faced significant safety risks and regulatory gaps.
He directed the Board to ensure that all diving operations comply with safety requirements, including medical fitness certification, approved operational plans, and the engagement of competent personnel.
Earlier, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary and Chairman of the Board, Dr Kamil A. Shoretire, said effective implementation of the regulations was critical to preventing accidents, injuries, and fatalities associated with hazardous diving operations.
