Nigerian Senate Passes Five Bills for First Reading

On January 29, 2026, the Nigerian Senate passed five bills for first reading during plenary.
The bills, all sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele Michael Opeyemi, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, are aimed at amending existing laws and strengthening key institutions in the health and judicial sectors.


The bills include the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (HB.1706); the Federal High Court Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB.990); and the Court of Appeal Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB.991).
Others are the University Hospitals (Reconstitution of Board, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB.992), and the National Hospital for Women and Children, Abuja (Establishment) Bill, 2026 (SB.993).
All five bills successfully passed first reading during the Senate sitting.
