Outrage as NUJ Demands Apology Over Wike’s Alleged Threat to TV Journalist

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for an immediate apology from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over a controversial remark directed at television journalist Seun Okinbaloye.

In a strongly worded statement issued on April 5, 2026, and signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union condemned the minister’s comment “If there’s anyway to break the screen, I would have shot him” — describing it as dangerous and an affront to press freedom.

The NUJ said it initially withheld its reaction, expecting a retraction or apology from the minister. However, the continued silence, it noted, raises concerns that the statement may have been intentional rather than impulsive.

According to the union, such rhetoric from a high-ranking public official poses a serious threat to journalists and risks fostering a climate of fear within the media space, particularly for professionals carrying out critical reporting.

The NUJ further urged the Federal Government to take a clear stand by condemning the remark and reaffirming its commitment to protecting journalists and safeguarding democratic values.

It also called on media stakeholders and civil society organisations to unite in resisting any form of intimidation against the press, stressing that a free and secure media environment is essential for Nigeria’s democracy to thrive.
