NiMet DG Charles Anosike Honoured for Advancing Climate Research, Meteorology Education
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Professor Charles Anosike, has received the 2026 Nigerian Educational Excellence Award in recognition of his contributions to meteorology education, climate research, and capacity development in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
The award was presented on Monday at the Faculty of Education of Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Represented at the ceremony by the Director of Weather Forecasting Services, Professor Vincent Weli, Anosike described the honour as a reflection of NiMet’s commitment to promoting knowledge, innovation, and educational development through climate science and meteorological services.
According to him, the agency’s role extends beyond weather forecasting, noting that NiMet has continued to support universities and research institutions through curriculum development, practical meteorological training, climate data access, and academic collaborations.
“NiMet has consistently partnered with educational institutions to provide curriculum support, hands-on meteorological training, and access to critical climate data,” he said.
“These efforts empower students and educators alike with practical tools for research, learning, and sustainable development.”
NiMet bridging science and society
Anosike further stated that the agency has strengthened the integration of meteorological studies into academic programmes while organising climate workshops aimed at improving public understanding of weather and environmental issues.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to training the next generation of meteorologists, researchers, and climate experts, adding that the recognition would further encourage NiMet to deepen its partnerships with educational institutions.
Speaking at the event, Professor Vincent Weli said Anosike’s leadership has transformed meteorological science into a practical development and learning tool for students, professionals, and researchers across Nigeria.
According to him, NiMet under Anosike has expanded collaborations with tertiary institutions to incorporate operational weather data into disciplines such as meteorology, geography, agriculture, and environmental science.
Weli also noted that the agency’s emphasis on modern forecasting systems and impact-based weather warning tools has strengthened technical training for young meteorologists and weather technicians.
He added that NiMet’s public communication platforms, including the Seasonal Climate Prediction and Daily Weather Outlook, are now widely used as teaching and research resources in higher institutions.
The NiMet delegation to the ceremony also included the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Shola Gabriel, and the Special Assistant on General Services to the Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Uket.
