Residents of Karshi, a satellite community in Abuja, are expressing outrage over an alleged attempt by some police officers to release a tipper lorry involved in the death of Miss Miracle Ebubechi Emmanuel, a final-year student of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State.
Miracle, who was the second child in a family of six, reportedly died on May 8 after a tragic accident involving a commercial motorcycle and the tipper truck. The vehicle, currently impounded at the Karshi Police Station, was alleged by residents and security sources to have been linked to previous fatal incidents.
The handling of aspects of the investigation reportedly angered the Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Muhammad Sanusi, who was said to have reprimanded the Divisional Police Officer over alleged negotiations connected to the embalming of the deceased’s body.
Community leaders reportedly contacted the police commissioner over fears that some officers were attempting to compromise the investigation. The intervention of the police boss was applauded by residents, who also praised the Inspector General of Police, Taju Disu, for ongoing reforms within the police force.
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), popularly known as VIO, was also said to have shown interest in the case by seeking technical information about the truck, amid concerns over public safety if the vehicle is returned to the road without proper scrutiny.
According to family members, Miracle had returned home from school on May 4 after travelling from Owerri to Abuja. On the morning of May 8, she reportedly left home on a commercial motorcycle heading to her mother’s shop at Orozo Market.
Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle rider was speeding despite the victim’s warnings to slow down. As the motorcycle approached a narrow bridge with bumps and potholes, the rider allegedly attempted to overtake the moving tipper truck from the wrong side.
Witnesses claimed the truck hit a bump, causing one of its tyres to lift briefly off the ground. During the attempted overtaking, Miracle reportedly fell from the motorcycle and was crushed by the truck, dying instantly.
The scene drew emotional reactions from residents, many of whom reportedly wept openly as crowds gathered. Both the motorcycle rider and the truck driver allegedly fled after the incident and have not been seen since then.
The death of the 27-year-old student sparked protests and temporarily disrupted traffic as angry residents blocked the road in grief and frustration.
Miracle was described by neighbours, market traders and family friends as hardworking, respectful and deeply committed to supporting her family. Sources close to the family said she managed her mother’s foodstuff business whenever she returned from school and was admired for her character and dedication.
Her mother, Mrs Peace Emmanuel, described the deceased as her “right hand,” saying the loss had left a painful vacuum in the family. Her father, Mr Elijah Emmanuel, also spoke emotionally about her contributions to both the home and the family business.
A family associate and Chairman of Karshi Market Taskforce, Engr. Peter Unogwu, praised Miracle as dependable and responsible, noting that she willingly took on challenges and supported her parents in business activities.
The incident has also prompted community leaders to take action against unregulated commercial motorcycle operations in the area. Following an emergency meeting, operators were directed to form a leadership structure and provide a database of riders within two weeks or risk being banned from operating in Karshi.
Residents believe the measure could help address security concerns and improve accountability among motorcycle operators.
Miracle was buried on May 16 at the Karshi community cemetery in the presence of a large crowd of mourners, including family members, neighbours, church members, market leaders and sympathizers from different parts of Abuja and Nasarawa State.
During the burial, hymns were rendered as tears flowed freely among mourners. Chaplain Ifeanyi Ifedibasia urged the grieving family to keep their faith in God, assuring them that death was not the end for believers.
Emotional scenes also unfolded as the deceased’s sisters paid tribute to her during traditional burial rites, describing her as bold and courageous.
The tragic death of Miracle Emmanuel continues to generate reactions across Karshi, with many residents insisting that justice must be served and those responsible held accountable.
