Major: End Killings, Extend INEC Deadline for NNPP
The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has urged the Federal Government to move beyond promises and take concrete steps to tackle the growing insecurity and killings across the country.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Dr. Major stressed that protecting the lives and property of Nigerians is the government’s primary responsibility. He emphasized the need for improved intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration among security agencies to restore peace and security nationwide.
According to him, while prayers are important, they cannot replace effective security measures. He called on the government to identify and prosecute individuals aiding criminal activities.
“The killings must stop. Nigerians should be able to travel freely from one part of the country to another without fear. Security agencies must work together, share intelligence and ensure the safety of lives and property,” he said.
Dr. Major lamented that insecurity has made road travel unsafe for many Nigerians, while the high cost of air transportation has placed additional hardship on citizens.
On the party’s preparations for the forthcoming elections, the NNPP chairman disclosed that the party has commenced uploading the details of its candidates following the resolution of its leadership dispute.
He revealed that the party had requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to grant a short extension to enable it complete the upload of candidates, explaining that delays in implementing court judgments disrupted the party’s electoral timetable.
Dr. Major said the party had already completed the upload of its polling agents, while the submission and verification of nomination forms for candidates seeking various elective offices are ongoing.
He further announced that the NNPP has restored its authentic 2022 Constitution and Manifesto and will continue to operate strictly in line with those guiding documents.
The NNPP chairman disclosed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) would meet in the coming weeks to ratify decisions taken by the interim leadership and strengthen preparations ahead of the elections.
He expressed appreciation to the party’s founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Okechukwu, members, supporters and Nigerians in the diaspora for their unwavering support throughout the party’s prolonged legal battle.
Dr. Major also commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law despite what he described as attempts to intimidate judges handling the party’s cases.
However, he expressed disappointment over delays in implementing court judgments affecting the party, noting that the situation had placed the NNPP at a disadvantage in its election preparations. He appealed to INEC to promptly enforce court decisions in the interest of democracy, fairness and the rule of law.
The NNPP national chairman also announced the appointment of Ambassador Shaibu Ahmed as the Deputy Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, stating that the decision was taken at an emergency meeting held in Lagos to strengthen the party’s leadership ahead of the elections.
He assured members that the NNPP remains united, focused and committed to providing Nigerians with a credible political alternative, while urging the media to continue giving the party fair and balanced coverage.
