The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that the proposed State Police Bill includes adequate safeguards to prevent abuse of power.

Kalu gave the assurance while speaking at a reception hosted by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, in Abuja.
He also sought the European Union’s support for Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional reform process.
According to him, the proposed legislation will establish state police services with clearly defined jurisdictions, independent oversight, professional recruitment standards, and coordinated command structures aimed at strengthening internal security across the country.
The Deputy Speaker also called for the passage of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, describing greater female representation in governance as both a democratic necessity and an economic advantage.
He further appealed to the European Union and its member states to continue supporting the constitutional amendment process, noting that although the bills have been passed by the National Assembly, they still require ratification by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly before becoming law.
