2027: Atiku, Amaechi Set to Fly ADC Flag in High-Stakes Presidential Contest

Barring any last-minute changes, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has settled on former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi contested the ADC presidential primary alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Atiku emerged victorious by a wide margin to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
Sources within the party disclosed that the ADC leadership, under the chairmanship of David Mark, held extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including Atiku, before settling on Amaechi as the party’s running mate.
According to informed sources, Amaechi, regarded as one of the leading figures in the opposition coalition, was selected to strengthen the party’s electoral prospects in the South, particularly the South-South geopolitical zone, where he is expected to wield considerable influence.
Party strategists are also said to be relying on Amaechi’s political network, including his longstanding ties with elements of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s political camp within the ruling APC, to expand the ADC’s appeal across key voting blocs.
The development comes on the heels of the exit of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and his supporters from the ADC for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a move that has reshaped the opposition political landscape, particularly in the South-East.
Amaechi is expected to be formally unveiled by the party in the coming weeks as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.
Political observers believe the Atiku-Amaechi ticket could set the stage for a fiercely contested presidential race and may pose a significant challenge to the ruling APC as campaigns gather momentum across the country.
