Nigeria, Germany Eye Deeper Economic, Energy Cooperation as Ambassador Ita Enang Presents Credentials

Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Germany, Senator Ita Solomon Enang, has formally presented his Letters of Credence to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, paving the way for renewed diplomatic engagement focused on trade, energy, migration and regional security.

The ceremony, held at the German Presidency in Berlin, officially marked Ambassador Enang’s assumption of office as Nigeria’s envoy to Germany.

The event began with a military welcome parade, followed by the signing of the accreditation register and the formal presentation of his credentials to President Steinmeier. The two leaders thereafter held bilateral talks on areas of mutual interest between Nigeria and Germany.

According to Ambassador Enang, President Steinmeier conveyed his warm regards to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and commended the longstanding cordial relations between both countries. The German President also recalled previous engagements with President Tinubu, including bilateral visits and meetings at international forums, while acknowledging Nigeria’s prompt processing of Germany’s incoming ambassador to Abuja.

Top on the agenda of the bilateral discussions were efforts to strengthen economic cooperation, particularly in Nigeria’s power sector. Both sides explored opportunities in off-grid electricity solutions, the Siemens power initiative and investments aimed at improving Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.

The meeting also examined prospects for expanding cooperation in agriculture, food security, technology and industrial development, with Ambassador Enang advocating increased German investment in automobile assembly plants in Nigeria to promote local manufacturing, technology transfer and employment.

Migration was another key issue discussed, as both countries considered frameworks for a structured Nigeria-Germany migration agreement that would create legal pathways for qualified Nigerian professionals in medicine, information technology, artificial intelligence and other skilled professions to work in Germany.

Regional security and diplomacy also featured prominently during the talks. Ambassador Enang highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in ECOWAS and stressed the importance of encouraging the return of Sahel countries that have withdrawn from the regional bloc to strengthen peace, security and regional integration.

The discussions further covered Germany’s role in the implementation of the Green Tree Agreement following the International Court of Justice judgment on the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary dispute, including humanitarian issues affecting communities displaced by the boundary demarcation.

Both sides equally explored opportunities for German companies to invest in projects that would harness gas currently being flared in Nigeria’s Niger Delta for electricity generation, alongside broader cooperation in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Ambassador Enang also conveyed the Federal Government’s appreciation for Germany’s humanitarian support to Nigeria, recently communicated by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul during a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

The envoy said the meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to deepen bilateral relations through sustained diplomatic engagement, increased trade and investment, and closer cooperation on regional and global issues.

The ceremony concluded with diplomatic honours, including a military parade and the ceremonial hoisting of Nigeria’s Green-White-Green flag at the German Presidency, symbolising the formal commencement of Ambassador Enang’s diplomatic mission in Berlin.
