NiMet, NEMA, NCC, Others Strengthen Coordination Ahead of Nigeria’s EW4All Launch

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has convened an inter-agency meeting to strengthen preparations for the official launch of the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative in Nigeria, scheduled to take place later this year.

The meeting, held on Friday, August 21, 2026, was chaired by the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof.

Charles Anosike, and brought together key government agencies and development partners involved in disaster risk reduction, weather forecasting, communications and climate resilience.

Among those in attendance was the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, while the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, participated virtually.

Also represented at the meeting were the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed; the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Matthew Adepoju; and representatives of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

The Local Organising Committee presented an update on preparations for the national launch, highlighting progress made, ongoing inter-agency engagements and priority actions required ahead of the event.

A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Nigeria EW4All Implementation Roadmap 2026–2029 by the Inter-Agency Technical Committee.

The roadmap outlines the strategic framework and priority actions for the coordinated implementation of the initiative, with emphasis on strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to detect hazards, communicate timely warnings and ensure that vulnerable communities can take appropriate action before disasters occur.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for participating institutions to review areas requiring stronger collaboration and coordination as Nigeria works towards establishing more effective, people-centred, multi-hazard early warning systems.

The EW4All initiative is designed to ensure that everyone, particularly communities vulnerable to climate-related and other natural hazards, has access to timely and potentially life-saving early warning information.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of NiMet and its partner institutions to improving disaster preparedness, strengthening climate resilience and ensuring that early warning information reaches those who need it most.

Officials stressed the importance of sustained inter-agency cooperation in translating early warning information into early action and reducing the human and economic impact of disasters across Nigeria.
