LP Pays Tribute to Late NLC General Secretary Ugboaja

The Labour Party has described the death of the General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, as a painful loss to the labour movement, Nigeria’s democracy and the party.

In a statement in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Ken Eluma Asogwa, said the late labour leader was a committed unionist, democrat and strong supporter of the Labour Party.
The statement said Ugboaja played a key role in strengthening the relationship between the Labour Party and the organised labour movement, particularly the NLC.
It said he actively participated in several meetings and deliberations that contributed to the development of the party’s new constitution.
According to the statement, Ugboaja was among members of the party’s National Executive Council who approved the formation of the Party for Social Democracy, PSD, in 2003, which later became the Labour Party in 2004.
The statement added that he later served as Deputy National Secretary of the party and National Secretary of the NLC Political Commission.
It also recalled his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, including his participation in the National Constitutional Reform Conferences of 2005 and 2014.
According to the statement, Ugboaja also served as a Director of the Alliance for Credible Elections, where he championed electoral reforms between 2007 and 2010.
The Labour Party extended its condolences to the leadership and members of the NLC, the organised labour movement, as well as the family, friends and associates of the late labour leader.
It prayed for the repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
The party added that Ugboaja died recently at the age of 60.
