Gumel, Zurmi Thrones in Mourning as Senators Honour Late Emirs
The Northern Senators Forum has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of two distinguished traditional rulers, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Sani, CON, Emir of Gumel, who died on September 3, 2026, and His Royal
Highness, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi and Emir of Zurmi, who passed away on Monday.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, the senators described Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Sani as a scholar, administrator and bridge-builder who occupied the Gumel throne with humility, wisdom and dignity.
The Forum said his reign promoted peace, unity and educational development in the Gumel Emirate. As a recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, he was described as a father to all, regardless of tribe or status, with his palace always open to the concerns of the oppressed.
He also championed modern education, encouraged girl-child schooling and provided calm and just leadership during periods of tension.

The Forum also mourned Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, Emir of Zurmi, whom it described as a respected traditional ruler who led his people with wisdom, courage and commitment, particularly during a challenging period of security concerns in Zamfara State.

During his five years on the throne, the Forum said he promoted peace, unity and resilience within the Zurmi Emirate, while his counsel and commitment to peace-building contributed to wider efforts to restore lasting peace and stability in the North-West.

The Northern Senators Forum extended its condolences to the Gumel and Zurmi Emirate Councils, the immediate families of the deceased monarchs, the Governments and people of Jigawa and Zamfara States, as well as the entire traditional institution in Nigeria.
The Forum appreciated the late royal fathers for their contributions to national stability, peaceful coexistence and community development, and prayed that Almighty Allah forgive their shortcomings, accept their good deeds and grant them Aljannah Firdaus.
It also prayed for strength and fortitude for the bereaved families and all those mourning the loss.
