Xi Urges BRICS To Shape New Global Order As China Takes 2027 Chair
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged BRICS countries to take a leading role in shaping the future of global affairs, calling on the grouping to champion innovation, peace, civilisational dialogue and reform of the international governance system.
Xi made the call on Saturday at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, as the grouping marked 20 years of cooperation and prepared for China to assume the rotating chairmanship and host the next summit in 2027.
According to Xi, BRICS has grown from a mechanism launched in 2006 into an influential platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries. He said the grouping now represents nearly half of the world’s population, about 30 per cent of the global economy and one fifth of global trade.
The Chinese president said BRICS members should “stand on the right side of history” and become pioneers of the times by strengthening cooperation in areas capable of driving inclusive global development.
He identified artificial intelligence as a major priority, urging members to deepen collaboration in AI and extend practical cooperation into emerging fields. China, he said, was proposing an initiative to promote new industrialisation through AI and was prepared to work with fellow members on research, development, applications and industrial supply chains.
Xi also called for BRICS to play a greater role in promoting international peace and stability, particularly in addressing conflicts in the Middle East. He said China would work with other members to contribute to efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
On relations among different cultures, Xi urged BRICS countries to promote mutual learning, exchanges among civilisations and harmonious coexistence while respecting differences.
He further called for reforms to global governance, urging BRICS members to promote greater democracy in international relations and work towards a fairer and more equitable international system while upholding the authority of the United Nations.
Analysts said the growing BRICS platform could give developing countries greater influence in debates on trade, finance, climate change, development, peace and security.
With China set to take over the BRICS chairmanship, experts expect Beijing to focus on practical development cooperation, technological advancement and strengthening the voice of the Global South.
The forthcoming Chinese presidency will also mark another chapter in the bloc’s evolution, following China’s previous BRICS summits in Sanya in 2011, Xiamen in 2017 and the virtual summit hosted in 2022.
