Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chancellor of Achievers University, Owo, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited (NCGC), Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, CFR, has applauded the progress being recorded in the areas of security and education under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing both sectors as critical to Nigeria’s quest for sustainable development and national renewal.

Dogara spoke at the 16th Convocation Ceremony of Achievers University, where he delivered a thought-provoking address titled, “Rethinking National Security for Sustainable Peace, Development and National Renewal.”

Addressing graduating students, members of the academic community, parents and distinguished guests, Dogara said recent reforms introduced by the Federal Government demonstrate a clear commitment to investing in the future of Nigerian youths while strengthening the foundations of national stability.

He commended the administration’s implementation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), noting that the initiative has expanded access to tertiary education and given hope to thousands of young Nigerians seeking higher learning opportunities.

According to him, education remains one of the most powerful instruments for nation-building and social transformation, stressing that societies that prioritize learning are better positioned to achieve lasting progress.
Dogara also praised efforts to improve the welfare of lecturers and strengthen the higher education system, describing teachers as critical stakeholders in shaping the future of the country.

He commended members of the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies and other security personnel for their commitment and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation.

Dogara observed that measures such as enhanced military operations, increased intelligence coordination, additional recruitment into security agencies and efforts to secure previously vulnerable areas were contributing to the country’s security objectives.

He, however, emphasized the need to sustain the momentum through continuous investment in modern technology, surveillance systems, intelligence gathering and strategic coordination among relevant institutions.
The former Speaker maintained that security remains indispensable to economic growth, investment and social development.

“A nation cannot fully prosper where citizens live in fear. Security is the foundation upon which education, agriculture, commerce and investment are built,” he stated.

As Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited, Dogara stressed that a peaceful and secure environment is essential for encouraging investment, supporting entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for economic expansion.
He further called on Nigerians to actively support government efforts aimed at national development, stressing that peace, unity and progress require collective responsibility.

According to him, government initiatives can achieve greater impact when supported by citizens, community leaders, traditional institutions, religious organizations and the private sector.

Dogara described universities as centres where future leaders are groomed and innovative ideas are developed to address national challenges.
He urged the graduating students to approach life with a spirit of service, excellence and patriotism, reminding them that academic success should translate into meaningful contributions to society.

The Chancellor charged the graduates to become ambassadors of positive change in their respective professions and communities.

“If you become a lawyer, serve justice. If you become a doctor, serve life. If you become an engineer, build what our country needs. If you become an entrepreneur, create opportunities for others,” he advised.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria’s future remains bright, citing the resilience of its people, the strength of its institutions and the opportunities being created through ongoing reforms.

Dogara concluded by calling on all Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to the shared goal of building a more peaceful, prosperous and united nation.

The convocation ceremony witnessed the graduation of hundreds of students across various disciplines and drew dignitaries from academia, government, industry and the wider society who gathered to celebrate the achievements of the institution and its graduating class.
