The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), through its Business Skills and Technology (BEST) Centre, has successfully organised a two-day capacity-building programme for its drivers, themed “Driving to Safety: Defensive Driving and Vehicle Handling Techniques.
The training aimed to strengthen drivers’ safety consciousness, professionalism, and technical proficiency, while underscoring ACCI’s ongoing commitment to staff development and improved road safety practices.

In her remarks at the programme, the Director of the ACCI BEST Centre, Dr. Tinuke Temitope, urged participants to remain attentive and actively engage throughout the sessions. She stressed that effective application of the knowledge and skills acquired would enhance their efficiency, professionalism, and overall safety on the road.

The programme featured in-depth sessions on defensive driving techniques, the duties and responsibilities of professional drivers, and the critical role drivers play as representatives and ambassadors of their organisations. Participants were also trained on hazard identification and space management, gaining practical knowledge on assessing road risks, anticipating the behaviour of other road users, and maintaining appropriate following distances.
Further sessions addressed professional conduct and effective communication, with emphasis on discipline, emotional intelligence, stress management, and responsible driving behaviour. Interactive group discussions and case studies enabled participants to share experiences, seek clarifications, and apply newly learned skills to real-life driving scenarios.
At the end of the programme, participants were equipped with vital competencies in defensive driving, vehicle handling, hazard control, and post-incident response. Through hands-on engagement and expert-led discussions, the drivers enhanced their safety awareness and capacity to handle real-world driving challenges.
The training concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants, reinforcing ACCI-BEST’s commitment to continuous capacity building, road safety advocacy, and professional excellence within and beyond the Chamber.
