Ambassador-Designate to Algeria Lele Dies Before Posting

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of Ambassador Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away just days after being appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to Algeria.

In a statement issued on April 22, 2026, the ministry disclosed that the senior diplomat died in the early hours of April 19 in Ankara, Türkiye, following a prolonged illness.

Until his death, Ambassador Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division.

His recent nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as envoy to Algeria had been confirmed by the Senate, marking what would have been another milestone in his diplomatic career.

Born in 1976 in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.

Over the years, he served Nigeria in various diplomatic missions, including Berlin, Germany; Lomé, Togo; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, earning recognition for his diligence, strategic insight, and commitment to national service.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, described the late envoy as a hardworking and humble officer whose death represents a significant loss to the Foreign Service.

Ambassador Lele was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in Kano State in accordance with Islamic rites.

The ministry extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, noting that his legacy of service and dedication to Nigeria’s foreign policy will endure.
