Benue @ 50: Time for Reflection, Resilience and Identity — Ortom
By Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has described the 50th anniversary of the creation of Benue State as a landmark moment that demands sober reflection on the state’s past, appreciation of its resilience, and a renewed commitment to its future.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Terver Akase, Chief Ortom said the golden jubilee offers an opportunity to review Benue’s journey since its creation in 1976 and to recommit to building a stronger and more prosperous state.
He noted that over the years, Benue State has continued to evolve, driven by the resilience of its people, the richness of its cultural heritage, and its vital contribution to national development, particularly through agriculture as the Food Basket of the Nation.
According to him, the last five decades have been marked by notable progress as well as serious challenges, stressing that the people of Benue have consistently shown perseverance, discipline and a deep attachment to their land. He said these qualities have sustained the state during difficult times and remain essential to its stability and development.
“The journey of these 50 years has not been without trials. Our people have endured periods of insecurity, pain and loss, yet they have continued to display uncommon courage and determination in defending their ancestral heritage and upholding the sanctity of human life. The story of Benue is therefore not only one of struggle, but also of hope, resistance to injustice, and an unyielding pursuit of peace and progress,” Ortom stated.
Reflecting on his tenure as Governor from 2015 to 2023, Chief Ortom said the experience further strengthened his belief in leadership founded on faith in God, the protection of human life, the rule of law, fairness and equity.
He said, “As Governor of Benue State between 2015 and 2023, I had the privilege of serving a people whose love for their land and commitment to justice inspired every decision we took in defence of our collective future. I remain deeply grateful to the people of Benue for the confidence they placed in me and for their steadfastness in the face of adversity.”
Chief Ortom emphasized that the 50th anniversary provides a fresh opportunity for all stakeholders — including government, traditional institutions, the private sector, civil society and all Benue citizens — to renew their commitment to unity, responsible leadership and inclusive development.
He congratulated the government and people of Benue State at home and in the diaspora on the celebration of the golden jubilee, urging them to remain resolute in the pursuit of peace, security and prosperity for the state, while also encouraging continuous prayers for those in positions of authority to enable them succeed.
