A tragic helicopter crash in Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Wednesday has claimed the lives of eight people, including two prominent government ministers. Among the victims were Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The Chief of Staff to President John Mahama, Julius Debrah, confirmed that the crash also took the lives of three other government officials and three Air Force personnel who were onboard the helicopter.

Describing the incident as a “national tragedy,” Debrah said the loss was deeply felt across the country. “The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” he stated during a press briefing.

Prior to the crash, the Ghana Armed Forces reported that radar contact had been lost with a Z9 model helicopter belonging to the Air Force. The aircraft had eight occupants — three crew members and five passengers. Authorities are yet to release the full list of those on board or the specific details of their mission.

Although investigations are still underway, preliminary indications point to possible mechanical failure or poor weather conditions as likely causes of the crash.
