Campaign Against Underage Driving Begins in Schools

The Federal Road Safety Officers Wives Association (ROSOWA) has launched a nationwide school sensitization campaign aimed at combating underage driving.

Speaking at the flag-off of the campaign at Fou’ad Lababidi Islamic Academy, Abuja, the President of ROSOWA, Dr. Nafisat Shehu Mohammed, said the initiative was designed to instill a proper driving culture among young people, noting that underage driving accounts for a significant percentage of road accidents.

Dr. Shehu-Mohammed emphasized the importance of incorporating basic road safety rules into school curricula to boost awareness among youths and reduce road crashes across the country.
According to her, “Indeed, the desire of every nation is to be blessed—blessed in human resources, especially with well-nurtured future leaders. This is the essence of the campaign.
“Taking the message of road safety to schools is a major strategy of catching them young.”
The ROSOWA President further stated that the high rate of accidents recorded in 2025 in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states had been linked to underage drivers, particularly those operating articulated vehicles.
She reminded students that the legal driving age in Nigeria remains 18 years.
A student of Fou’ad Lababidi Islamic Academy, Abuja, Muhammad Ishak, commended ROSOWA for extending the campaign to schools across the country.
However, he called for stricter sanctions against underage driving to further discourage the practice.
It is believed that the enlightenment campaign will enable students to pass the road safety message to their friends, parents, and communities, thereby contributing to safer roads nationwide.
