National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has paid a glowing tribute to former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on the occasion of his 84th birthday.

In a goodwill message, Senator Mark hailed General Babangida as a patriot deeply committed to the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria.

He said:

“Today is not merely to mark the passage of time, but to celebrate the extraordinary life of a soldier, a patriot, and a statesman who, at 84, remains a living monument to courage, service, and honour. From the moment he first wore the nation’s uniform, General Babangida embodied the creed of duty before self.”

Mark recalled that Babangida’s career, defined by discipline and distinction, spanned decades of national service—defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, safeguarding her unity, and mentoring generations of officers who went on to serve with integrity.

According to him, Babangida’s years of leadership stood out for resilience, wisdom, and humility. “In the barracks and on the battlefield, he was resolute. In the corridors of power and policy, he was wise. His voice bore the weight of experience, yet was always tempered with humility,” he said.

He further noted that those who served under Babangida remember not only his tactical brilliance but also his compassion as a leader who combined firmness with empathy.

Senator Mark stressed that even in retirement, Babangida has continued to serve Nigeria—offering guidance, shaping national discourse, and acting as an elder statesman whose counsel is respected across political lines.

“His patriotism was never defined by uniform alone, but by a lifelong commitment to the ideals for which he once risked everything. At 84, his medals may have dimmed in shine, but his legacy glows ever brighter,” Mark added.
