Delta Tragedy: Anti-Drug Operation Turns Fatal as Officer Drowns
A routine anti-narcotics operation took a tragic turn in Delta State over the weekend when an operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) drowned while pursuing a fleeing suspect.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Obiaruku community, Ukwuani Local Government Area, during an anti-narcotics operation near the River Ethiope Bridge.
According to local sources, NDLEA operatives had intercepted a suspect allegedly involved in trafficking illicit drugs. However, while officers were escorting the suspect and the alleged illicit drugs towards the River Ethiope Bridge, the situation suddenly escalated.
In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect reportedly broke free from the officers and plunged into the murky river waters. The officers, determined to prevent his escape, went after him, turning the operation into a dangerous aquatic pursuit.
While backup teams succeeded in rescuing one operative who was struggling in the current and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment, his colleague was not as fortunate and disappeared beneath the water.
Competent sources disclosed that the primary suspect and his accomplices managed to escape through the river network. However, hours later, local divers recovered the lifeless body of the missing officer.
The body was subsequently released to the NDLEA after community members performed traditional rites customary for drowning victims along the River Ethiope.
Another source described the incident as a mystery, noting that the river was reportedly not deep enough to drown someone. The source explained that certain rites, including the provision of a goat and other specified items, must always be performed before the remains of a drowning victim can be released by the community.
Meanwhile, when contacted, the Delta State Commander of the NDLEA, Halilu Hamidi, directed inquiries to the agency’s national spokesperson, Femi Babafemi.
Reports indicate that internal investigations are underway to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the actual cause of the officer’s death.
