Democracy Firmly Rooted in Nigeria – NASS …Inducts 785 Newly Recruited Staff

The National Assembly on Monday declared that democracy has become firmly stabilised in Nigeria, a development that paved the way for the recruitment of 785 new staff across Grade Levels 8 to 12 in December last year.

Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Barrister Kamoru Ogunlana, stated this during the induction ceremony for the new recruits held at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja.

Represented by the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly (DCNA), Engineer Bashir Yero, Ogunlana noted that Nigeria’s democratic stability over the past 26 years, free from any threat of military intervention, has strengthened the legislature as an institution.

“Our democracy has continued to stabilise with no threat of military intervention. The National Assembly as an institution has grown stronger, more professional, and more responsive to the needs of the Nigerian people,” he said.

He urged the new staff to embrace commitment, productivity, and professionalism, stressing that legislative service is more of a calling than a routine job.

“You are joining the Service at a most auspicious time. Working in the National Assembly demands much more than academic qualification or routine service. It requires deep knowledge of legislative practice and procedures, high moral standards, and strong personal discipline,” he charged.

Ogunlana further advised them to master the mission, vision, and functions of the National Assembly; understand their civic duties, rights, and privileges as public servants; constantly update themselves on laws, rules, and regulations governing the Service; and embrace technology to meet the modern demands of legislative work.

Above all, he urged them to remain loyal, diligent, and committed to national service through the legislature.

Reassuring them of management’s commitment to staff welfare, the CNA said:
“Your salaries are paid promptly, and the first 28 days allowance which you are all entitled to has been settled. As you settle into your roles, remember that the National Assembly is the symbol of our democracy. By serving here, you are directly contributing to strengthening governance and consolidating Nigeria’s democratic journey.”

As part of efforts to reposition the workforce for better service delivery, Ogunlana also reaffirmed last week that the jobs of over 3,000 legislative aides to the 469 federal lawmakers remain secure, with assurances of improved remuneration.
