Education First: Sebastine Hon Supports 50 Benue Students, Pledges 500 Overseas Scholarships
From Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Benue State, Prof. Sebastine Hon, SAN, has awarded scholarships to 50 indigent students of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), to support their education.
The scholarship was presented during a students’ summit and empowerment programme organised by the Hon Va Youth Movement, which brought together student leaders and representatives of tertiary institutions across the state.
Addressing the gathering virtually, Hon pledged to sponsor about 500 Benue students for studies abroad if elected governor in 2027.
Hon, who made the presentation through his son, Michaelson Hon, also pledged to provide other scholarship opportunities for students studying within the state.
The SDP candidate also promised to tackle insecurity and create a safer environment where students could pursue their education without fear or disruption.
Making the presentation, Junior Hon urged the beneficiaries and other students to support his father’s 2027 governorship ambition, describing him as a “talk-and-do” politician who would prioritise education, security and development.

Student leaders from the National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS), National Association of Igede/Idoma Students (NAIS), Community of Tiv Students (CTS), NANS Zone C, NANS Benue, MOAUM and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), commended the initiative.
They described the scholarship as timely support for students facing the rising financial burden of education.
The summit, themed “Youths as Leaders of Today,” was also addressed by the President of the Hon Va Youth Movement, Michaelson Hon, who encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies and take advantage of opportunities that could improve their future.
The speakers called for increased investment in education and youth empowerment, while the beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the scholarship and urged other well-meaning Benue indigens to support students in need.
