False Rape Allegation: Ogun State Police Command Releases TikToker to Women Affairs Ministry
The Ogun State Police Command has released popular TikToker Abigeal Nsikak, widely known as Mirabel, to the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development after she voluntarily appeared at a police station over an alleged false rape claim.
The development was confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, in a statement issued on Wednesday via X.
According to the police, Mirabel turned herself in at the station, where she underwent a comprehensive medical examination and has remained fully cooperative with investigators.
The police explained that in consideration of her welfare, emotional condition, and support requirements, she was released into the custody of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The ministry has taken full responsibility for her wellbeing and assured the Command that she would be made available whenever required as investigations proceed.
The Command stressed that the case is being handled with utmost care, professionalism, and sensitivity, given its implications for sexual assault survivors, public trust, and justice.
Members of the public were urged to avoid speculation, harassment, or prejudicial remarks and to allow investigators to carry out their duties without interference. The Command assured that updates would be communicated as developments occur.
The case first attracted nationwide attention in mid-February when Mirabel shared emotional and tearful videos on TikTok, alleging that unidentified persons broke into her home in Ogijo, Ogun State, and sexually assaulted her. The videos went viral, generating widespread outrage, sympathy, and concern across the country.
Following the viral posts, several celebrities, influencers, and social commentators spoke on the broader issue of sexual violence in Nigeria. The public reaction also reportedly included financial donations made in support of Mirabel, as the videos sparked intense emotional responses online.
However, the narrative later faced intense scrutiny after social media users and commentators highlighted alleged inconsistencies in her account. These reportedly included the absence of supporting phone records, lack of physical evidence of forced entry at the scene, and perceived gaps in the timeline she provided.
Public debate heightened after Mirabel appeared in a widely circulated interview with social media activist VeryDarkMan, during which she stated that she might not have been raped. The interview marked a significant turning point in public perception and triggered widespread calls for her prosecution over allegedly making a false accusation.
Despite the controversy, the police clarified that no arrests have been made in connection with the alleged incident. Investigations remain ongoing, and authorities emphasised that conclusions would only be reached after all facts have been thoroughly examined and assessed.
The Ogun State Police reaffirmed their commitment to upholding justice, protecting genuine victims of sexual assault, and enforcing the rule of law, while also ensuring that any false allegations, if established, are addressed strictly within the framework of the law.
