Farmers–Herdsmen Crisis: Ukomu Igala Organization Appeals for Immediate Peace in Ibaji

The Ukomu Igala Organization (UIO) has expressed profound grief over the recent violent confrontation between farmers and herdsmen in Ejule-Ojebe town, Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State, an incident that reportedly resulted in loss of lives, several missing persons, and the destruction of farmlands, crops, and cattle.

In a statement signed by its National Leader, James A.
Ataguba (Rtd), Ph.D., the organization described the clash as both tragic and avoidable, calling on all parties involved to immediately lay down their weapons and pursue peaceful dialogue.
UIO conveyed its sincere condolences to families who lost loved ones and sympathized with individuals whose sources of livelihood were impacted by the violence.
The organization urged the Kogi State Government to take swift action to stop further bloodshed and prevent the crisis from worsening. It also appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act decisively in restoring law and order, while adopting proactive measures to avert reprisal attacks.
Beyond the immediate violence, the group drew attention to the long-standing socio-economic challenges confronting Ibaji Local Government Area. The statement noted that years of infrastructural neglect, environmental degradation, and limited economic opportunities—particularly in farming and fishing—have heightened communal tensions and exposed the area to recurring conflicts.
UIO further called on both the Kogi State Government and the Federal Government to investigate the underlying causes of the repeated clashes and introduce sustainable solutions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and development in Ibaji.
Residents were advised to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities or movements.
Reaffirming its dedication to peace and unity, the organization prayed for comfort for the bereaved families and emphasized the need for collective efforts to prevent further loss of lives in the affected community.
