Global Rules Not Optional — Guterres Warns as World Leaders Converge in Davos

UN chief cautions against selective compliance with international law as global elites meet in Switzerland for the World Economic Forum in Davos, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a strong warning that the foundations of global peace and stability are under growing threat.

In a statement released on Wednesday via his X handle, amid intense deliberations among the world’s most influential decision-makers, Guterres reaffirmed that the United Nations Charter remains the cornerstone of international relations, describing it as the bedrock of peace, sustainable development, and human rights.
The UN chief cautioned that when leaders choose which international rules to follow and which to ignore, they weaken the global system and create what he described as a dangerous and troubling precedent.
“When leaders trample on international law,” Guterres warned, “they undermine global order.” He stressed that selective obedience to agreed rules erodes trust among nations and fuels instability at a time when the world can least afford it.
Guterres also sounded the alarm over the growing influence of a small but powerful group of individuals capable of shaping global narratives, influencing elections, and controlling public discourse.
According to him, this development goes beyond inequality and represents a deeper corruption of institutions and shared democratic values.
Precise Post recalls that his remarks come amid increasing concerns about misinformation, political interference, and the concentration of power in the hands of unelected actors—issues expected to feature prominently in discussions at Davos.
Central to his message was a call for collective responsibility. Guterres described the UN Charter as a binding agreement that applies equally to all nations, regardless of size or power. “All countries must comply with it,” he insisted, “fully and faithfully.”
Precise Post further notes that the warning from the UN Secretary-General serves as a sobering reminder to leaders meeting in Davos that global cooperation, respect for international law, and the protection of shared values are not optional but essential for sustaining a stable and just world order.
