House Ad-Hoc Committee Chair Aliyu Applauds TCN’s Presentation, Flags Persistent Power Sector Constraints
By Urube Peterv
The Chairman of the House Ad-Hoc Committee on the Power Sector, Hon. Ibrahim Al-Mustapha Aliyu, has praised the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for providing an extensive report outlining strategies aimed at expanding and stabilizing electricity transmission across the country.
Speaking during a public hearing, Aliyu revealed that although TCN currently has a transmission capacity of 8,600 megawatts, it continues to grapple with several obstacles such as financial limitations, frequent vandalism, and numerous uncompleted projects. He explained that the company depends largely on internally generated revenue, with 80 to 90 percent of its funding sourced from distribution companies—many of which are indebted to TCN to the tune of ₦450 billion.
The Committee Chairman further pointed out delays in subsidy settlements, noting that the Federal Government owes TCN ₦217 billion—an obligation that the Ministry of Finance has yet to offset. He appealed for government intervention to help mitigate these challenges and bolster nationwide power supply.
The hearing was subsequently adjourned to December 16, 2025, at 1 p.m., at the House of Representatives Complex, Abuja.
